About Marine Protected Area of Cinque Terre

Marine Protected Area of Cinque Terre

Established in 1997, the Marine Protected Area of Cinque Terre encompasses approximately 1,286 hectares of marine and coastal territory along the Italian Riviera in the Liguria region. This area stretches in front of the five colorful fishing villages of Cinque Terre—Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore—known for their dramatic cliffs, terraced vineyards, and centuries-old cultural landscapes. The MPA aims to preserve delicate marine habitats such as Posidonia oceanica seagrass beds, rocky reefs, and sandy bottoms, which host a diverse array of Mediterranean marine life including groupers, Octopus vulgaris, and various species of colorful reef fish. It serves as a refuge for endemic species and supports sustainable fishing practices, balancing conservation with local livelihoods.

Besides its ecological significance, the Cinque Terre MPA enhances the outdoor recreation appeal of the area. The protected waters are popular for snorkeling and scuba diving, allowing visitors to observe underwater biodiversity in clear Mediterranean waters. Above water, coastal trails like the famous Sentiero Azzurro connect the villages and offer spectacular cliffside hiking experiences combined with scenic views of the marine area. Local boat tours allow visitors to view the coastline from the sea and access remote coves. The integration of marine protection with the cultural heritage of the Cinque Terre National Park creates a unique combination of natural beauty and traditional rural Mediterranean life that attracts over two million visitors annually. The MPA plays a vital role in maintaining the health of these ecosystems amid increasing tourism and development pressures.
